2021 study on Liver, Kidney & Heart Disease

LIVER, KIDNEY, AND HEART DISEASE IN THE U.S.

Millions of people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with liver, kidney, or heart disease and suffer from a plethora of symptoms. These organs play key roles in being healthy and if one or more of them are not functioning properly it can be very concerning. Kidney disease can cause numerous health issues from being unable to filter blood properly including anemia, depression, increased infection rate and so much more. Having kidney disease can also cause heart disease. Heart disease can cause a lot of discomfort within the body including chest pain, shortness of breath, and more. Lastly, liver disease can also be very concerning, commonly related to obesity or alcoholism. Most patients when getting any of these conditions must begin taking many medicines and make significant lifestyle changes. While this is a common route some scientists have begun to investigate natural remedies.

AVOCADO LEAF EXTRACT – Flavonoids

Avocado leaves are growing in popularity for its medicinal properties as more people learn about its uses and benefits from many different native tribes. The leaves have a plethora of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents that make it a powerful remedy within the body. This includes flavonoids, polyphenols, terpenes, and serotonin. Flavonoids are the most notable on that list. Flavonoids are extremely important for the body and can help reduce risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, and can aid in kidney function. They are found in high concentrations in fruits and vegetables, and have also been known to be found in tea and wine.

POTENTIAL OF AVOCADO LEAF EXTRACT ON TOXINS IN THE BODY

In 2021, a group of scientists from Ekiti State University in Nigeria began studying the effects of avocado leaf extract on different organs exposed to toxins in a body. These researchers were from the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Department of Science Laboratory Technology at the university. The results were released in the International Journal of Phytomedicine and Phytotherapy where they discovered the potential usefulness of avocado leaf extract when managing liver, kidney and heart diseases.

In this study 40 wistar albino rats, which are often used in scientific studies when testing various drugs and remedies, were divided into several groups to test the effects of avocado leaf extract. They were given Carbon Tetrachloride, Silymarin, Rifampicin and avocado leaf extract to evaluate the reactions within the rats. The doses were given orally every day for 14 days and were then evaluated to see how the avocado leaf extract performed.

The results of the study concluded when avocado leaf extract was given to the rats, after being given treatments that disrupted multiple organs, that it performed in a comparable way to the silymarin. Silymarin is used as a standard drug for heart, liver, and kidney diseases. When the extract was given, it caused a restoration of enzymes in the kidney, liver, and heart.

The conclusion stated “Amelioration of distorted cardiac, hepatic and renal histoarchitecture as well as restoration of lipid profile, biomarkers of liver and kidney injury and antioxidant enzymes (catalase and superoxide dismutase) affirm the potential usefulness of P. Americana in the management of liver, kidney and heart diseases.”
